MAURICE OKAFOR in this report writes that Chief Gbazueagu Nweke Gbazueagu, known as ‘GNG’, the All Progressives Grand Alliance[APGA] senatorial candidate in the February 16, National Assembly elections, has shed tears over the deplorable state of the Oji River -Achi- Awgu road.
The road was constructed as one of the major Trunk A roads in the defunct old Eastern region, by colonial masters to aid commercial and economic activities among the towns in old Awgu division.
The road has been a transient link to Enugu -Port Harcourt express road but has remained in jeopardy for over a decade now.
Due to negligence and abandonment of work by the contractors, a gully erosion finally succeeded to cut the road into two, between ‘Umueze Achi community in Oji River local government area and Mmaku community in Awgu local government area, with the implication that commuters who want to drive across to Mmaku from Achi, a distance of a few meters must be compelled to drive through Udi town and link the Ozalla/Enugu to Port Harcourt road at the popular ‘4 Corner’ junction, before they will drive to Awgu junction and thereafter turn round.
The deplorable state of Oji River – Achi- Awgu trunk A road in the past decade had also underdeveloped the nearby towns and brought untold hardship to the rural dwellers who usually engage in exchange of trades and local foodstuffs, usually on local market days namely,–‘Orie Awgu’ and ‘Eke Egbo Achi, every four days.
Chief GNG who was guest at Radio Nigeria political programme [Media link], lost his emotions on the sufferings of his people particularly on market days.
When he recovered from his emotions, Chief Gbazuaegu promised the listening audience and all people of Enugu West senatorial district that he will do all within his limits as a senator of the zone if elected.
He stressed that the case of Oji River – Achi -Awgu road and Onyeama mines of Enugu – Onitsha express road must be a collective worry of all the legislators from the zone, and to engage the state government to do it’s own part.
‘THE AUTHORITY’ SOUTH-EAST checks revealed that the long neglect and abandonment of the Oji River -Achi -Awgu Trunk A road in recent times is being politicized with allegations that the current senator of Enugu West senatorial district, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, connived with the contractors to siphon money meant for the project. While the construction of the second segment of the road that starts from Awgu town linking Aninri into Ebonyi state has continually gained his attention and consistent in it’s execution.
Chief Gbazuegu had earlier on another programme vowed that he will commit fifty percent of his total emoluments in solving the needs of the citizens of Enugu West senatorial district, in addition to lobbying for development of the district within four years of his service.
He urged the people of Enugu West district and the entire Enugu state electorates to let their votes count in the 2019 elections and vote for candidates, who truly want to sacrifice their money and time for uplifting the well being of the people and infrastructural deficit in the state,in harmony with the state government.
