Dr (Mrs) Jennifer Douglas-Abubakar, wife of the presidential flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alh. Atiku Abubakar, is unrelenting in her efforts to make sure her husband’s dream of making Nigeria work again becomes a reality. She believes in the Atiku/Obi’s policy framework for sustainable development. This is demonstrated in her engagement in a series of Town Hall meetings with women across the South East and South South geopolitical zones of Nigeria. She has also on several occasions accompanied her husband on campaign rallies and continually called on Nigerians to choose the pathway to a viable future we all deserve by voting for quality representation, if we must get Nigeria working again, writes ANGELEEN NKWOCHA.
Whenever Jennifer Abubakar visits any state, the atmosphere is usually exhilarating, and filled with excitement. Women throng out in large numbers, beautifully adorned in colourful wrappers crested with Atiku/Obi pictures in high ecstasy chanting their support for the Atiku /Obi ticket.
Indeed, some are born great, some achieve greatness, others have greatness entrust in them, but for Mrs Abubakar, true greatness is when Nigerians enjoy the real change they truly deserve.
In her interactive fora themed “Lets Talk”, she has constantly re-echoed the Atiku/Obi’s policy framework to Nigerians in general and women in particular. Her utmost dream and desire is to see that everyone partakes in the economic growth, social justice, security, empowerment, job creation, gender equality and strong governance encapsulated in her husband’s policy.
To her, the forth coming presidential elections is a defining moment for Nigerians to leverage on the power of their permanent voters card, PVC, to change the dynamics of Nigeria’s current politics and policies that have not worked.
In one of her recent Town Hall meetings with women in Calabar Cross River state, she called on women to get their PVCs and ensure that members of their household do the same and vote for Atiku to ‘change the change’.
She asked them to get to the voting centre, cast their votes and protect it. She noted that Atiku if voted into power will tackle the issues of insecurity, healthcare, revamp the economy, and will give equity to gender participation.
She said, “Atiku will not do anything for you if you do not vote for him to get to Aso Rock. You have to work hard for him to be voted into office. Go and collect your PVCs. It is going to be a defining election. When the sun rises tomorrow, we will send Atiku to Aso Rock, she said.
The governor of Cross River state, Ben Ayade assured Mrs. Abubakar of his people’s total support and urged the women to “come out en mass to vote for Atiku/Obi and all the candidates of PDP.
His wife, Dr. Linda Ayade, noted that though the women would pull out 50% of the total votes, it would be necessary that they get 50% inclusiveness when the Atiku/Obi government is formed.
At the same forum, Sen. Florence Ita-Giwa, former special adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo on National Assembly matters, said she had to return to PDP for the sake of Atiku Abubakar.
“I served Atiku as Adviser for 4 years. Even me as adviser, I can make a good President, not to talk of a man who works 24 hours.
“We want human being to be president, not somebody who is not reachable or can not communicate,” Ita-Giwa said.
Mrs. Abubakar also visited the Obong of Calabar’s palace, where the entire traditional council gave blessings to the aspiration of her husband.
In Umuahia Abia state, where Mrs Abubakar accompanied her husband on a campaign tour, she tasks “Abians” to get their PVC and vote out the incumbent government come February 16.
“If you are tired of the hunger and starvation, joblessness and insecurity in this country, then go and get your PVC and vote for Atiku at the forth coming polls, on February 16”, she said.
She expressed confidence that her husband will tap from his wealth of knowledge and experience to revamp the economy. Adding that she has known Atiku for quite a long period of time and can vouch to his competency.
“I have known Atiku for over 35 years, and I make bold to say that he is the right man to revive Nigeria’s economy as well as empower the youths and women.
“Atiku Abubakar is the best candidate to salvage this country from the current economic decadence. His administration will give special recognition to the youths and women of Nigeria. He will tackle issues of insecurity and unemployment”, she added.
In Yenogoa, Bayelsa state, Mrs Abubakar while enlightening women on the rudiments of voting she tasked them not to only vote but to protect their vote and ensure it counts.
“If they like they should bring in people from Niger and Sudan. We will bring from Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Lagos and all parts of the country. Bring all your household, vote and protect your votes, to make sure your vote counts. Bayelsa women, you gallantly opposed the military in their armoured vehicle in time past, in defence of democracy, you can do it again”, she said.
Hon. Seriake Dickson, assured Atiku Abubakar that he does not need to campaign in Bayelsa because Bayelsa is the headquarters of PDP, affirming that his victory at the forthcoming polls is assured. According to Gov. Dickson, the APC have no ground in Bayelsa state.
“Bayelsa is the headquarters of PDP in Nigeria.
I have already assured Atiku Abubakar that he does not need to campaign in Bayelsa state, because all our votes are for him”.
He charged them to vote for all PDP in the forthcoming polls and refuse to be intimidated.
In Uyo Akwa-Ibom state, during the PDP, Presidential women rally. Mrs Abubakar stressed on the need to vote out the incubent government, for failing to keep to their campaign promises. She averred that Atiku is a man of his words and will keep to his policies and promises.
“I am overwhelmed by the reception accorded us in Akwa-Ibom state. We need to vote out this incubent ‘broom’ administation. Atiku’s government will stand for you, women of Akwa-Ibom. Atiku believes in gender equality, I don’t need to preach to you, you are hundred percent PDP”, she said.
“Nigeria is at the verge of getting better come February 16, 2019. Akwa- Ibom is making Nigeria great again. If you vote for Atiku you will thrive in your businesses, and you you will be empowered”, she said.
Jennifer Abubakar has through an excellent combination of hardwork and strong will, enlightened Nigerians and women in particular, that gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance. For her, a vote for Atiku/Obi ticket is a vote for women and a better Nigeria.
