Barely three days after the declaration of winners and losers of the recently concluded governorship and states assemblies elections in Zamfara, no fewer than thirteen people were reported to have lost their lives after attacks by the bandits.
The tragedy happened in Birnin Magaji town, the headquarters of Birnin Magaji Local Government, when on the fateful day, at about 7:00pm, the criminals suddenly launched a violent attack on the residents of the town and succeeded in eliminating one and abducted another.
Also the hoodlums proceeded to the nearby town of Dan Isah, a town that borders Birnin Magaji but falls in Kaura Namoda Local Government of the state.
While in the town, according to eye witness account, the bandits, who were in hundreds, violently opened fire indiscriminately killing anyone that they came across.
“ They instantly killed five on their arrival while the remaining were said to have met with their death when they were trying to revolt”, revealed the source.
The bandits also destroyed properties worth millions of naira belonging to the residents and partially sacked a number of them who are now squirting with some of their relatives in the nearby villages and town, while those who sustained injuries are receiving medical attention at home as many of them could not afford money to settle their medical bills at hospitals.
Carrying different dangerous weapons the criminals were using motorcycles, and each of the bike was carrying three including the riders.
“we are virtually a refugees in our own home”, revealed one, Isah Saadu a resident of Dan Isa, one of the affected towns adding that there is no reason whatsoever for anyone to deprive another of his right to live. These people have for long been taking our lives, destroying our properties and eve to the extent of burning both our houses and grains, so what do they need? He asked. All efforts to talk to the police public relation officer DSP Shehu Mohammed proved abortive despite a number of calls.
It could be recalled that another dozens of people were killed few days to the general election in the state apart from the loss of properties.
