Operatives of the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit have on Thursday rescued a naval officer and six other travellers who were kidnapped in Rivers State on March 3, 2019.
The AUTHORITY gathered that the rescued victims were abducted along Ubima/Omerelu/Port Harcourt road.
It was learned that the naval officer who sustained injuries from the bandits’ gunshots, has been hospitalized in an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
It was further gathered that the victims were released after the IGP Monitoring unit commander, DCP Benneth Igwe, ordered those involved in the criminal acts to release the victims unconditionally or attract the wrath of the command.
The IGP unit had also visited the areas (Ubima and Omerelu) severally in search of kidnap victims especially the home of the kingpin which led to the release of the seven victims.
DCP Benneth Igwe, who confirmed the release of the seven hostages, said the operatives had on Wednesday, razed down the kidnappers den in a forest in the area.
Igwe said, “Seven persons including a naval officer was rescued today ((Thursday) from their abductors in Ubima/Omerelu forest. He has been admitted in the hospital because of the wounds he sustained from gunshots.
“We went to the kidnappers’ camp and demolished it yesterday (Wednesday) night. No other person is left there. ”
Meanwhile, one of the kidnapper kingpins whose identity is not known is said to have threatened to attack the IGP unit at Aluu in Ikwere Local Government of the State if they continue to search for him and his gang.
Recalled that on Monday, March 11, gunmen attacked and hijacked an 18 seater bus along Elele/Ubima road and the whereabouts of all the passengers are still unknown.
