Nigeria Institute of Town planners, NITP Holds Eastern Zonal Assembly Meeting in Awka

OJO ISAAC writes that Anambra State Government has asked the Eastern Zonal Assembly of the Nigeria Institute of Town planners, NITP, to ensure well trained members and corrupt free practice to assist in galvanizing and driving the vision of Governor Willie Obiano administration.

The Commissioner for Lands, Physical Planning and Rural Development, Mr. Nnamdi Onukwuba stated this during the 2019 Eastern Zonal Assembly meeting in Awka that attracted nine states including Cross River, Rivers, Imo, Abia, Ebony, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Bayelsa and Anambra.

Declaring the meeting open, Mr. Onukwuba, who expressed delight with the synergy among member states and stated that the state government is aware of the implications of lack of physical planning in the development of urban and rural environments noting that the present administration commenced the implementation of Anambra State Physical Planning Law and Awka Capital Territory Development Authority to fast track efficient development of an aesthetic capital city.

In his remarks, the National President, NITP, Town Planner Lekwa Ezeutah extolled the cordial relationship between the Association and the state government and appealed for continuous backings that will enable them discharge their duties professionally and reminded the Commissioner to report to the National Committee of the Association any form of illegality by members for appropriate sanctions.

The state Chairman, NITP, Mr Maduakonam Amaechina revealed that for sustainable growth or improvement in the environment either economically and physically, there is need for encouragement from government pointing out that the Eastern Zonal Assembly is created as a platform for interactions and synergy by the nine state chapters.

Delivery a lecture titled, “Physical Planning and Managing the Environment: The Town Planner’s Role” Dr. Chinedu Okoye an Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Management, UNIZIK Awka, emphasized that planning is a multidisciplinary task, constantly changing and requires progressive adjustment from time to time advising Planners to uphold good Manner, ethics and standard in discharging their duties.
