From Isaac Ojo Nnewi
As the rainy season commences in full gear, the people of Ezinifite in Nnewi South local government area of Anambra State are now living in fear and anxiety, no thanks to dilapidating Nkwo Ozu erosion site in the sleepy community.
Late last year, the Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano inspected the erosion site and assured the people of speedy palliative work but few days after the inspection, the site has been abandoned by the contractor handling the project.
The traditional ruler of Ezinifite, HRH Igwe Sam Obika(Ezeoha 11) said his people were overjoyed during the governor’s inspection of the erosion site but unfortunately got disappointed when palliative work on the site stopped.
The royal father regretted that the surroundings of the gully erosion site have been in shambles with horrible devastation done to the little work carried out by the government contractor.
He pointed out that the gully erosion is gradually extending its destructive tentacles to their kit and kin across Ezinifite Ulasi River who are predominantly farmers noting that it has become very difficult if not impossible for the farmers to evacuate their bumper harvests due to eroded roads.
Igwe Obika also said that the big and popular market in the community ‘Nkwo-Ozu’ is now a shadow of itself as trading activities has been reduced to non-existence because of the rampaging erosion menace.
The Ezinifite monarch appealed to Gov Obiano to come to the aid of his community by ordering the contractor back to site before the entire people are sacked from the town.
The royal father who commended the governor on the security situation in the state urged him to assist the community by tackling the erosion menace as many subjects residing outside are now afraid to come home not to talk of bringing their investments home.
