Oraukwu Grammar Schoolestablished in 1959, has come a long way producing professionals in academics, politics, entrepreneurship and other human endeavour, no wonder the school Old Boys Association is set to celebrate its 60th Anniversary with pomp and pageantry. This revelation was made at a Press Conference by the association at Annes Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Thursday. CYRIACUS NNAJI reports.
With the theme “Celebrating Our Heritage, Enjoying Our Future” all is set for the celebration of Oraukwu Grammar School (ORAGRAM) 60th anniversary, on the 20th April, 2019 at Oraukwu in Anambra State.
Speaking on the history of Oraukwu Grammar School, the National President, Chief (Barr) Vincent Ananti said that Oraukwu Grammar School was founded by the Anglican Diocese of the Niger in February 1959, in Oraukwu Town in Idemmili North of Anambra State and that the founding principal of the school who was Very Reverend Canon HDO Chiwuzie was able to lay a solid foundation for the school, and kept the school at par with other prime schools then and as a result the school excelled in both science, arts and sporting activities, adding that the school was reputed for discipline as entrenched by the founding principal.
Ananti disclosed that that school has produced a number of distinguished personalities including Prof. IheanyiOkpara a professor of medicine at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH); Professor Promise Okpala, Former Registrar of NECO; in Law, the school can boast of so many lawyers and judges, including Honurable Justice O.J. Okekerted., Justice Amaechina, a serving judge of Anambra Judiciary.
In the area of Pharmacy, the school has the likes of Dr. Anthony ObioraChukwuka chairman of Green-Life Pharmaceutical Company Limited the owners of Lonat malaria medicine while in Entrepreneurship they have Charles Odunukwe, the Chairman of Colonade and Shadon Industry Limited. “We also have Chief Sir Patrick Chibueze of Bozak International Limited, Mr Mike Okonkwo, Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Col. George ChijiokeNkenke.
“In the area of religion, we have produced many clergy men including Arch Bishop Godwin , the Bishop of Nnewi Diocese and Arc. IfeanyiOdedo, the overall Pastor of Full Gospel Church among other areas.
Anant stated that the school started on a solid foundation and has been doing well; “That is the reason we are here, we are very proud of our alma mater the source of our strength, because academics, knowledge is strength, the foundation that was led at Oraukwu Grammar school has sustained all of us, even in the US, we have so many surgeons engineers, computer gurus doing very well all over the world, they will be coming to celebrate our alma mater at 60, so we are happy that we are alive to celebrate the fountain of our knowledge , we are proud of the school, because the school made us what we are today,” Ananti stated.
Graced by members of the Anniversary Committee which include OkwudiliOjukwu-Enendu, former editor, Businessday; Chief Barr. Vincent Anati, National President of the group; Dr. Anthony ObioraChukwuka, National Vice President; MrAkachukwuEzeobele, National Coordinator and Sir ZitaOkeke, there is assurance of a grandiose celebration.
The National Coordinator, MrAkachukwuEzeobele, speaking on the development , activities and achievements of the association said the old boys embarked on massive infrastructural development, first of all the old boys decided to renovate the principal’s house to be able to attract first class principals to the school principal.
In addition, he said, the old boys fenced the entire Principal’s house. While one of their members, on his own, sank a borehole in the school, the old boys gathered themselves together to make sure they distributed the water to various houses in the school. He said the Old Boys sponsor the PTA and also pays the teachers who are employed by the PTA.
Ezeobele also stated that these various contributions by the old boys hav enhanced the academic performance of the students of the school, adding many of the Old Boy visit the school from time to time to teach the students, which brings has also brought a sense of mentorship which promote academic excellence.
On one of their major challenge, Ezeobele said it is not easy getting everybody to buy into the vision of the group, adding that being able to reach everybody has become a major challenge. He however stated that with Whasapp and Telegram have helped in creating a platform for interaction for the members.
Speaking on the programmes lined up for the anniversary, Dr. Anthony ObioraChukwuka said the event will commence on the 19th of April reunion of all the Old Boys at the school premise while on April 20, there would be Service at the school Chapel, after which everybody would march to the field on a red carpet for the celebration to start
Chukwuka said highlight of the event will include awards to members of the Old Boys who have contributed to the development of the school.
