Benue State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condened spate of violence in parts of the state.
The council rising from its Congress in Makurdi noted that findings have traced the despicable trend to the attitude of some politicians who had in the past, armed youth during elections to help them rig the electoral process.
The Benue NUJ noted that youth who were given weapons to prosecute elections for politicians did not surrender same, adding that this crop of youths are now using these weapons to perpetrate crimes.
The Congress therefore called on the state government to surmmon a meeting of political leaders, traditional ruers and representatives of the local militia perpetrating the mayhems to find a lasting solution to the problems.
The council also called on the state government to revisit the amnesty program it started at its inception to ensure that these arms in the wrong hands are retrieved, while those disarmed are provided with training so as to possess legitimate means of livelihood and conscience to abandon the life of crime.
The Congress stressed on the need for increased public enlightenment on the need for peaceful co-existence among Benue communities, and therefore called on the state government to strengthen it’s partnership with the media in state towards achieving this.
