MAURICE OKAFOR writes that ahead of the inauguration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state inauguration for a second term in office, on Thursday, May 29, a U.S based management consultant from Enugu state, Dr Felix Ugwu, has expended his kind gestures and care for the poor/needy to some discharged but withheld patients at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital ( ESUTH) because they could not afford to offset their bills. He spent about .9million naira at the weekend to set six of such patients free from the hook of the hospital’s management.
Dr Ugwu and his group further visited old peoples home called ,’Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home of the Elderly, Awkunanaw, Enugu, where he expended an equivalent amount in purchase of food items, condiments and domestic wares for upkeep of the inmates.
Dr Ugwu said the gesture is his own way of celebrating the upcoming swearing-in of Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for a second term in office on May 29,stating that Governor Ugwuanyi’s leadership skills has revolutionized governance in Enugu state.
His words: “The governor has done well in uplifting the poor, the needy and residents of the state. What we are doing today is in support and furtherance of the good nature of the governor’.
Ugwu who was pained by the number of stranded patients at ESUTH hospital who were begging him to settle their bills in the hospital pleaded with well-meaning Nigerians to visit such hospitals and assist indigent patients.
At the old peoples home, Awkunanaw Enugu, the sister in charge of the home for the elderly, Sister Ellen Creed was very grateful to Dr Ugwu for his philanthropy.
Creed said that the home currently had no fewer than 60 inmates and depended solely on assistance from members of the public “but what we have witnessed today is a great surprise.
“Enugu people are generally good but this amount of assistance is extraordinary. The state governor has been a long faithful friend of this home.
“ He tells his friends about us and they in turn come to help us to enable us to serve more elderly people,” Creed said.
The Coordinator of The Mandate Group for Ugwuanyi, Mr Ifeanyi Agu, said that Ugwu had always championed the course of the downtrodden.
