Senate President, Ahmed Lawan’s call for the President and All Progressives Congress (APC) to consider giving the party’s presidential ticket in 2023 to the South west in honour late winner of the June 12 1993 presidential election, MKO Abiola, has attracted reactions from mainly the South east stakeholders who are also agitating for the zone to produce the next President of Nigeria

The senate president, who called for power a shift to South-west in 2023, said this would best honour late Chief MKO Abiola and advised President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure that the candidate of APC would come from the zone.

“The president and indeed our party must beware of divisive elements who are now proponents of retaining power in the north beyond 2023,” Sahara Reporters quoted him as saying.

“I have said it before and I believe that 2023 presidential ticket of the APC must go to the South-west. Since I made this comment last time, some members of my party have been hatching a plot to suspend me from the party but I am not moved and I will still hold my ground that power must go to the west.

“June 12 Democracy Day is a milestone in Nigeria’s history and anyone who embraces democracy in Nigeria should be proud of what Buhari has done and it takes so much courage to do.

But in a swif reaction to the Senate presidents call, National Chairman of the United Progressives Party (UPP), Chekwas Okorie described the statement as “ a very bad beginning for him as the senate president.

“He just started and his primary concern should be to establish a united National Assembly that will collaborate with government for development.

Okorie noted that dabbling into the politics of geo political group by the senate period at this early stage of his assumption of duty would be very disappointing and could spell doom for him, adding that it is not the right way to show appreciation to the South west, if he feels they made him Senate President

According to the UPP National Chairman, “2023 will be a contest, just like they are getting ready for the contest, the South east are also preparing. The APC will not be the only platform to contest the seat. We know that it will not be an easy road for the nation.

“Making such statement so early has singled out as a bad leader even as we has shown him as the chief campaigner of the South west ahead of 2023, but like I said the South east will see it as a contest and will be battle ready”
