Reps ask FG to engage with Shia group

The house of representatives on Wednesday condemned vehemently the act carried out by members of Islamic movement (Shia) at the National Assembly and in the city centre.

Recall that Shia members on Tuesday carried out a violent protest calling for the release of their leader, Ibraheem Zakzaky at the National Assembly and environs where lives were allegedly lost, properties worth million where distroyed and police officers badly injured.

Condemning the act, members of the green chember called on the federal government to put an end to the menace by addressing the issue.

The matter which came under urgent national importance during plenary was moved by Rep. Tony Elumelu.

Moving the motion, Elumelu urged the government to as a matter of urgency engage the Shitte group so as to amicably resolve their grievances.

“The internal security of the assembly ahould be thoroughly assed and asequate measures employed to mitigate against further occurrence”, he said.

Speaking also on the motion, Rep. Bamidele Salam causioned that if the issue is not tackled on time it could lead to further crisis in the country.

He called in the Federal Government to obey the rule of law as so many court of competent jurisdiction had ordered for the release of the Shia leader.

“So many judgement has been given by the court asking their leader to be released but those judgment have not been obeyed, we must tackel the root cause of this crisis so we don’t have the same incidence as Boko Haram. The security of lifes and property is fundamental to this country”, he said.

The speaker in his ruling referred the matter to the relevant committee when constituted.
