MAURICE OKAFOR and IKE IKENYI write that Senator Chuka Utazi, currently representing Enugu North senatorial district for a second term during his first tenure was chairman of Senate Committee on Anti- Corruption and financial crimes. On that position, Senator Utazi defended and took the anti- corruption policy of the federal government to all nooks and cranny of Nigeria and even beyond. But eventually the same institution came for his jugular.
THE AUTHORITY gathered the anti-corruption outfit has accused him of non disbursement of equipment he garnered with money secured from the federal government as part of his constituency project, which parked at his country home, Nkpologwu in Uzo Uwani local government area of Enugu state.
The ICPC said the equipment are supposed to have been distributed before the end of his first tenure as Senator of Enugu North senatorial district.
Senator Utazi’s defence was that he has been making arrangements for the disbursement of the equipment which includes tricycles, motor cycles and grinding machines but the heat of his re election processes at Abuja, has occupied him. To that effect, he is waiting to use the opportunity of the current National assembly recess for the disbursement. Utazi also boasted that all the equipment are intact as supplied.
THE AUTHORITY checks revealed he has lived up to his defence as he started disbursement of the equipment on Tuesday, August 6,with beneficiaries from Igbo – Eze South and Udenu local government areas of the district.
It was gathered that a total of 60 people from 16 wards and 20 in Igbo Eze South and Udenu local government areas respectively, benefited either a tricycle, motorcycle or a grinding machine. A total of six tricycles, 24motor cycles and 30 grinding machines were shared among them for their economic empowerment.
The sharing of the items for the empowerment scheme was done under the watchful eyes of the staff of the Independent Corrupt Practice s Commission(ICPC) in Nkpologwu in Uzo Uwani local government area of Enugu state, the country home of Senator Utazi who represents the Enugu North senatorial district.
Senator Utazi said some other local government area in his district will be invited another day for their own share. Enugu North senatorial district comprises of six local government areas namely, Nsukka, Udenu, Uzo -Uwani, Igbo- Eze North, Igbo -Eze South and Igbo – Etiti local government areas. It is the largest senatorial district in Enugu state,with greater population and land mass.
