Plateau Unrest: Agency unveils peace week programme

The Plateau Peace Building Agency (PPBA) has unveiled actvities to mark its upcoming peace week.

Declaring the event open, the Director-General of PPBA, Joseph Lengmang, the Director-General of PPBA said the peace week aimed at promoting the ideals of peace B in the state.

Lengmang who said the peace week celebration has the theme “Climate Change for Peace: Promoting Healing, Forgiveness and Reconciliation in Plateau”.

The DG emphasised that there is need for peace as a pre-condition for meaningful growth and development.

“The idea behind the peace week is to bring together responsible people to promote the ideals of peace.

“If there is anything that is paramount to civilisation it is peace, hence this underscores the 2019 Plateau peace week,” he said.

Lengmang who thanked Gov. Lalong for the approving funds for the event, said the week long programme would feature series of activities which include; media advocacy, peace walk, community engagement, unity and peace discourse, Climate action for peace/planting a tree for peace as well as a visit to troubled areas where a strategic conflict and peace management meeting will be held with people affected in crises areas, from September 16 to September 21.

On his part, Secretary to the Government of the State (SGS), Prof. Danladi Atu, stated that Gov. Lalong’s idea of peace was that of a “collective legacy” of the Plateau people hence the importance of the event.

According to him, there is “inclusiveness” in Lalong’s government which is crucial for sustainance of peace and that what people ought to ask during the week long event was “what can I do to ensure peace in the land”.

In his goodwill message, the ALGON Chairman, Plateau State, Hon. Ezekiel Vwalkap, assured of the support of the 17 LGA Chairmen in the State towards ensuring peace.

Highlight of the occasion was the unveiling of the logo and the investiture of Katdapba Gobum of the Nigeria Standard newspapers as Media Peace Ambassador of Plateau State. Others so decorated were Kenzy Ngupar, Langtang Dapar, Tok Morgan, Kashida Yilyok, Rose Kim and Pam Zi Jamang.
