From all indications, the Enugu state governor,Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has remained upbeat in his administration’s policy to ensure that Enugu state is very safe and reckoned among others as one of the safest state in Nigeria. Starting from the heinous Nimbo in Uzo-Uwani local government area massacre over three years ago, allegedly perpetrated by some Fulani herdsmen on the helpless villagers,to the recent challenges of incessant kidnap of prominent people along Awgu axis of Enugu to Port Harcourt express way, Governor Ugwuanyi in his position as the Chief Security officer of the state, working in partnership with the state police command and other security agencies has been consistent with both reactive and proactive strategies in curtailing the wave of crime rate in the state.
The latest of such strategies is the procurement of 360 Hilux vehicles manufactured by Innoson motors to boost effective security patrol by the various agencies across all nooks and cranny of the state. The strategy is in an addition to the recruitment of 1,700 forest guards from the civil population to enhance the strategy of community policing in the state. Even though, the resolution of employing forest guards in the states was a general consensus of the South East governor in their meeting in Enugu, but Governor Ugwuanyi has matched ‘words with actions’ when others are still plotting on possible ways to implement the policy.
Unveiling the vehicles before news men in Enugu last week,Governor Ugwuanyi disclosed that a total of 100 number of the vehicles will be distributed among the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force and Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC),to enhance their operations. He said the remaining 260 vehicles will be distributed to the 260 electoral wards in the state.
According to Ugwuanyi, the decision to purchase the vehicles so as to beef up vehicular movement for security operations across the state was a general consensus reached during security meeting with all the members of the State Assembly, local government council chairmen, the Director of State Services (DSS) and the Security Chiefs of DSS in the council areas. He announced that a security trust fund will be launched in the state to manage the arrangement.
THE AUTHORITY checks revealed that Governor Ugwuanyi’s upbeat in tackling security related issues in the state has continued to receive commendations from within and outside the state.Speaking to news men at the weekend, an American based business consultant who hails from Enugu state,Dr Felix Ugwu, commended Governor Ugwuanyi for tackling security challenges in the state frontally through proactive methods..
Dr Ugwu who had stayed away from Nigeria for more than 30 years aftermath of his armed robbery experience at New haven axis of Enugu metropolis, but have had a change of mind in the last couple of months extolled the initiative of adopting the security trust fund by the state government, stating issues of security in all ramifications should be every body ‘s business
He also commended the initiative of recruiting forest guards from the civil populace to complement the efforts of the security agencies, expressing hope of uniformed partnership while extolling Governor Ugwuanyi for being the first to implement the policy.
His words, “In fact, the Governor has shown that the responsibility vested in him as the chief security officer, is a task that must be done since the primary business of any government is the security and welfare of the citizens.
“There’s no gain saying that the votes cast for Ugwuanyi were votes cast for the advancement of good governance; to re-enact his performance during his first tenure.
“I thank the Most High God for the humane disposition of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi which has been brought bare in his general approach to governance; it is simply commendable.
“I clap for Ugwuanyi led government for the purchase of 100 Made in Nigeria pick-up trucks and 260 Toyota Sienna vehicles for security agencies, neighborhood watch and forest guards in the state,” he said.
THE AUTHORITY recalls that prior to the 2019 Governorship elections,Dr Felix Ugwu, who visited Enugu state as at then, visited Esut State Teaching hospital Park Lane, Enugu, and paid hospitals bills for some discharged patients, who were withheld by the hospital management for their inability to offset their bills. Dr Ugwu said the gesture was in support of good governance being enthroned in Enugu state by Governor Ugwuanyi. He equally bought gift items and distributed to some motherless babies home in the state.
