Custom smashed syndicate specializes in re-bagging foreign rice in Adamawa, Sized 1050 bags worth N21.8m custom duties

As part of effort to rid the country of smuggling activates,The Nigeria Custom Service, Adamawa/ Taraba Command has smashed a syndicate specializes in re-bagging per boiled foreign rice into local bags in yola, Adamawa state.

The syndicate who uses a large warehouse along Yola road in Jimeta to re-bag the foreign into bags used to package locally produced rice in the country where caught in the art by the men of the Nigeria Custom Service upon a tip off.

Briefing newsmen in yola, the comptroller, Adamawa /Taraba command, Kamarudeen Olumoh said the warehouse is being used to store locally produced rice but the suspects confessed that they normally re bag the foreign rice into the local bags because it cost more in the open market.

He said the custom recovered 900 bags of the foreign rice that were already open for re bagging stating that the paid value of the rice is N14.5m adding that 15 suspects have been arrested and will soon be charged to court.

In the same vein, the command has also intercepted and arrested three persons and a truck along mubi- Yola road with 450 bags of foreign worth about N7.3m believed to have been smuggled into the country from Cameroon republic.

The truck driver had concealed the bags in 100kg bags used to packaged beans, Barbara nut and millet, the rice was concealed in between 300 bags of beans, millet and Barbara nut.

The comptroller, while calling on the public to always give useful information to security agencies said Adamawa/Taraba command is out to fish out smugglers from their hide out, he also urged traders in the market to avoid buying foreign rice for sale, that the Custom will soon enter the market and any store a bag of foreign is seen will have his/herself to blame.

The total value of both seizures is put at N21.8m
