Senate probes past JAMB heads over poor remittances

By Ignatius Okorocha
Senators have directed the Upper House Committee on Education to probe all the former heads of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to ascertain why they remitted low revenue into the Federation Account during their tenure.
The resolution reached on Tuesday followed the adoption of Order 43 moved by Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) that deals on matters of personal explanation.
In his submission, Melaye said that JAMB before 2016 paid into the Federation Account a meagre revenue that rose from N50million to N70 million as Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from Universities and Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
Melaye further noted that the revenue had increased to N5 billion in 2016 and N7.8 billion in 2017 and wondered why the revenue remitted by JAMB in the past had dropped abysmally.
In his words, “since JAMB can remit N7billion in one month, we must work on relevant agencies such as National Examination Council (NECO) and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to generate more revenue.
“There is need for the relevant Senate committees to effectively carry out their oversight functions with a view to understanding what went wrong in the past and block all the leakages in the agencies,” Melaye said.
In his contribution, the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmed Lawan, raised serious concerns with allegation, noting that a?something was amiss and we need to find out what happened in the past and why there is a sudden increase in remittances.”
In his remark, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, directed the Committee on Education to investigate the claims and report back to the Senate.
