Buhari must act on herdsmen killings, Senate insists

By Ignatius Okorocha
Senators have insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari must stop the wanton killings of innocent Nigerians by armed herdsmen in various parts of the country
They said that only drastic measures taken by the President against the perpetrators would save the countryas economy from collapse.
Last week, President Buhari had faulted the Senate position that he had not done anything serious to stop the herders from their atrocious acts. He listed the steps he had taken to bring the situation under control.
But at its plenary on Tuesday, the Upper House regretted that the incessant killings by the armed herdsmen had persisted, adding that foreign investors were scared of doing business in Nigeria.
The clarion call by the Senate followed a Point of Order by Senator Shehu Sani( APC-Kaduna Central) on the frequent killings of his constituents in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State which shares borders with Zamfara, Kebbi, and Niger states.
He said: “Bandits have made life intolerable to the people of that part of the state. Many villages in this local government have been sacked; farmers donat go to their farms nowadays; many of the citizens reside in that local government are now in the capital. Of concern is the fact that killings and abductions have become a daily affair. It is one issue that has not been able to get national and global spotlight.a?
In his remark, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, lamented that the situation was getting out of hand and appealed to the Executive arm of government to wake up to its responsibility of protecting Nigerians.
