Nigeria’s problem is greed – Traditional leader

From Blessing Ibunge, Port Harcourt

A traditional leader in Rivers state, Chief Edoghotu Brown Omekwe, has stated that the greatest problem of Nigeria is not security or wrong leaders in office but greed by those who are in position to impact in others positively.

Chief Omekwe who is also a humanitarian worker in Emaruto Community, Abua/Oduah LGA of the State, stated this in Port Harcourt yesterday while receiving a Peace Award from Global Human Rights Council, GHRC.

Omekwe who appreciated the award by the Non Governmental Organisation, noted that the issue of insecurity in the society will be a thing of the past if the will to do well with the little they have positively influence the lives of their family members, neighbours and even those not known but come to them for help.

“I am delighted because there are those who go campaigning to have this award but here I am, honoured without even asking for them to come.

“The problem of the society is greed and it is only you and I that can work together to sanitize it. In our individual families nobody is satisfied. So when a group of persons who are towards achieving a goal are not self contented, that is what we are facing today in Nigeria.

“The problem of this country is not insecurity, is not hunger, is not joblessness, it is greed. And until we go back to the drawing board where we believe that when you go to school, you finish you get a good job, start a life and begin to see that any day you make someone smile is your happiest day, where one person can stand to take care of thousands of people and he’s happy about his doing, thousands of people will be happy, then the society will be a better place”.

Speaking earlier before presenting the award, Mr Friday Barilule Nbani, said the ward was “in recognition of Chief Edoghotu Brown Omekwe’s outstanding contribution towards the promotion of peace, people’s rights and humanitarian services” in the state and outside the Rivers state.

Nbani who stated that GHRC is an auxiliary organization of the World Leaders Forum, disclosed that he had the mandate and support of their boss Chowdhury Mosharaf Hossain of Ireland, to present the humanitarian award to the traditional leader.
