The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has called on the Federal Government to put in place a mechanism that will see to inclusion of representatives of the Institute on the accreditation team of accounting departments in universities and other tertiary education institutions in the country.
President of ICAN, Nnamdi Anthony Okwuadigbo, who made the call in Abuja when he led a delegation of the Institute on a working visit to Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, said the move would ensure that the curricula of the institutions are in line with the present demand.
A statement made available to newsmen in Abuja by Ben Bem Goong, a deputy director in the Federal Ministry of Education, said Okwuadigbo also advocated for direct entry admission into universities for holders of the Institute’s Accounting Technician Scheme (ATS) certificate.
While saying the visit was necessitated by the yearning to ‘work with the Ministry in moving the cause of the accounting profession forward, especially in accounting education, the ICAN boss stressed that in spite of the numerous achievements of the Institute, a lot still needs to be done in order to reach the desired destination.
Responding, the minister of education expressed the readiness of the Federal Government to work with the ICAN in moving the nation to its desired level of development.
Adamu said the resolve to work closely with the Institute was informed by its commitment to national development, noting that the nation stands to gain a lot when same passion is deployed in the education sector.
The minister challenged officials and members of ICAN to evolve more proactive and inclusive policies geared towards moving the economy to the league of developed nations.
