ECOWAS PARLIAMENT: 5TH Legislature to be sworn-in first quarter of 2020

As the tenure of the 4th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament winds up, the 5th Legislature is expected to kickstart at the first quarter of 2020.

In a briefing with journalists on the sidelines of the Meeting of the Conference of Committees’ Bureaux on Wednesday in Banjul, Gambia, venue of the Extraordinary Session of the 4th legislature of the Parliament, the Leader of the Gambian Delegation, Hon. Kebba Barrow however noted that the current Chair of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government Mahamadou Issoufou in consultation with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Jean-Claude Kassi Brou will have to come up with a date.

“The date will be announced by the secretariat and the invitation sent to the Members of Parliament.

He further explained that the Extraordinary Meeting taking place from the Monday 27th to the 31st of January will be looking at some of the things the ECOWAS Parliament plans to do in the 5th Legislature.

“As you already know as per the enhanced supplimentary Act, the 5th legislature is going to start in the first quarter of 2020, which have to be confirmed by the current President of ECOWAS Commission where the swearing in of the parliamentarians will be done. This thing will be discussed in consultation with the President of Ecowas Commission and hopefully before the first Extraordinary Meeting for 2020 and the swearing in of the parliamentarians will be done”.

And on the Seminar taking place from Thursday 23rd to Saturday the 25th of January, the Gambian Lawmaker said the Seminar will evaluate the report on the activities of the 4th legislature in order to improve on its work in the 5th Legislature.

“We have had a consultant look into the programs and activities of the 4th legislature and that report is going to be presented to plenary so we can look into it and see where we can strengthen as we going into the 5th Legislature”.

This Extraordinary Session taking place in Banjul, Gambia brings an end to the 4th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament.
