Tambuwal replaces Dickson as chair of PDP Governors’ Forum

By Myke Uzendu

Governors elected on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have appointed Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state as their Chairman, in an meeting that took place in Abuja on Sunday night.

Tambuwal will take over from Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State who is about to served out his tenure despite his unsuccessful attempt to replace the state with another PDP governor.

According to a statement issued by Mohammad Bello, special adviser to governor Tambuwal, the Sokoto State governor replaces outgoing Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, who was absent at the meeting and whose tenure will elapse on February 3, 2020.

The choice of Governor Tambuwal was unanimous as all the governors in attendance at the party’s 88th National Executive Council held at the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata plaza, Abuja, endorsed his appointment as their chairman.

Accepting the responsibility, Tambuwal pledged to run an inclusive administration and to move the party forward.

A source close to the party informed The AUTHORITY that Governor Darius Ishaku was earlier considered as the new leader of the governors and to that effect, the meeting of the governors was agreed to hold in Taraba State governors lodge. He later stated that other forces in the party were more comfortable with Tambuwal who was a close ally of the party’s National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus as well as the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike.

You may wish to recall that both party leaders threw their weight behind Tambuwal during the party’s Presidential Primary election in 2018.

The source further disclosed that the appointment was to prepare the ground ahead of the party’s national convention as so many party members are already expressing disenchantment with the leadership style of the party’s National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus. He said that the first task of the governors leader was to ensure that he mobilizes all party machinery to ensure he is re-elected at the convention.

His predecessor, Dickson was, however, conspicuously absent during the governors meeting and at the NEC meeting.
