Lassa-fever/coronavirus: EHORECON sensitises Abuja residents

To forestall spread of contagious lassa-fever and other deadly diseases, Nigerians have been urged to desist from unhealthy sanitary practices.

The advise was given by Sanitarian Isa Adamu, Assistant Director, Environmental Health, Environmental Health officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) at a sensitization programme on Public Health, Hygiene and Waste Management in Garki Model Market and Jabi Motor Park, both in the Federal Capital Territory.

The awareness campaign organized by EHORECON was in response to spread of lassa-fever and outbreak of coronavirus in some countries.

At both locations where EHORECON sensitised the people, Sanitarian Adamu identified uncleanliness as the root cause of diseases which has led to some deaths.

Also speaking, Sanitarian Kelvin Okafor described sanitation as the cradle of development for any country.

He said a healthy family and country will spend less on treatment of illnesses.

He said the FCT will be greatly affected if the markets are in bad condition.

“We are exporting food products, if they are not of good standard, it will be a bad market,” Okafor stated.

He said the dreaded coronavirus started spreading from a market in China.

He also condemned use of tyres to process meat.

Earlier in Garki Model Market, a vegetable seller from Karu market, Mrs Jessica Nwachukwu condemned the attitude of some women who cut their vegetables in the market before taking it home.

She described the habit as unhealthy and capable of exposing the family to several illnesses.

At Jabi Motor Park, the Assistant Organising Secretary, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lawrence Fadipe stated that the union is not happy with the sanitary condition.

He attributed the decadence to the facility managers.
