New CAC Registrar General hits the ground running

The new Registrar General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Barr.GarbaAbubakar, appears to be leaving no one in doubt of his readiness to reposition the Commission for better performance.Abubakar, who before his elevation to the position of registrar general, was the Director of Compliance in the Commission, has already proceeded to put in place mechanisms that would enhance seamless business registration in the country.

Born in October 1966 in Bauchi, Abubakar, whose appointment has continued to elicit commendations from stakeholders, is seen by many as a round peg in a round hole going by his vast experience both in private and public sectors within the last three decades.

The AUTHORITY gathered that Abubakar, who graduated from Ahmadu Bello Universiy, Zaria in 1988 with a bachelor degree in law (LLB) and proceeded to the Lagos law school and was called to bar in 1989, vividly manifested his leadership prowess when he joined the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund 1993-1995 as Zonal Legal Officer, Kano.

Abubakar’s scintillating performance at the Trust Fund made him a reference point in the sector with many companies came calling before he settled for Nicon Insurance Corporation as Assistant Manager (Legal).

In 2004, he rose to the position of Senior Manager (Legal and Secretariat) in Nicon Insurance Corporation, a position he held before joining CAC as Principal Manager (Compliance).

Abubakar’s position as Director, Compliance in CAC, before his new appointment, saw him heading one of the major engine rooms of the Commission with duties that include reviewing and approving applications for winding up, approving notice of appointment of liquidators and receivers/managers.

Others are attending to general complaints from shareholders/directors on the management of companies, reviewing petitions for investigation of companies and recommending suitable persons for appointment as inspectors, reviewing and recommending applications for appointment of external counsels, recommending counsels to be assigned briefs and fees payable to them for legal representation, among others.

It was gathered that the meticulous way these duties were discharged by Abubakar has now rekindled hope that he will not only deliver on the mandate of the commission but will also make the Commission a global reference point on promoting ease of doing business.
