Days of torturing suspects to obtain confessional statement is over – Rivers CP

The newly deployed Commissioner of Police, Mr Joseph Mukan has stated that the era of torturing a suspect by the police to obtain confessional statement is over, stressing that his leadership will protect the lives and properties of Rivers residents.

CP Mukan stated this while responding to questions from journalists at his maiden press briefing at the Police Headquarters on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.

This as the police boss has also noted that the challenge faced in the country is extreme corruption, noting that it affects every sectors of country.

He said: “The cankerworm of this country is corruption. Every sectors of this country is involved”.

He said to achieve clear enforcement against corruption in the State, he would ensure that police officers are properly supervised at their various beats.

In his briefing earlier, CP Mukan, said he will work in line with the policy of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, in his partnership with the citizens to achieve effective crime control, hence the set up of community Policing Advisory Committee at all level.

Speaking on the restriction order by the state government to contain the spread of coronavirus in the state, he said he had zero tolerance for corruption and respect for human rights.

“Clearly, the enforcement of extent laws usually comes with a measure of discomfort and inconveniences which most times is not intended.

“In this light of the above, I am going to ensure that innocent persons are not detained unlawfully, and unjustifiably denied their liberties.

“To this end, all Area Commanders, DPOs/HODs are hereby giving the matching order to closely monitor the activities of their personal, especially while enforcing compliance on the restriction order, to contain the spread of the dread coronavirus ravaging the entire globe.

“Recall that while addressing my management team, after taking over, I was made to understand that there are pockets of complaints against our men arising from the enforcement of compliance. I shall with immediate effect address such complaints and ensure that defaulting officers are made to face justice.”

The police boss while affirming that he will provide a credible leadership that is professional, responsive and accountable, promised to explore the rich manpower base to impact on their mandate.

He commended the state government for all the supports to the police command, adding that he will work in harmony with the government to achieve conducive environment.

“Let me extend my pledge to the Government of Rivers State, as under my watch, I shall entrench harmonious working relationship with the Government to achieve our common goals of providing a conducive environment for all to realise their potentials. Hence I strongly solicit the support of the government in terms of provision of logistics and other assistance I may require in the course of my duty.”
