Edo guber pull: Withdraw nominations given to indicted candidates – PDP party chieftain urges APC, PDP

A political chieftain in Adamawa state, Dr Umar Ardo, has called on the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress and the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party to as a matter of morale standing withdraw “the nominations given to all persons standing trials on criminal charges of corruption, embezzlement of public funds, money laundering, breach of public trust, and other such criminal misdemeanours,” amongst the candidates of both parties in the forth coming guber election in Edo state.

Dr Ardo, who made this request in a press statement sent to The AUTHORITY, added that in the alternative, the two dominant parties in the country should “let those with such charges patriotically resign their public offices or waive their constitutional immunities, where applicable, and get their cases determined conclusively by the law courts,” adding that “nothing less would restore public trust to our political parties, to our public practitioners and to our fledgling democracy and governments.”

The call by the Adamawa strong politician is coming on the heels of President Buhari’s endorsement of Pastor Ize Iyamu as the APC candidate in the forth-coming guber election in Edo state.

Buhari had, while welcoming and endorsing the candidate at Aso villa, urged party leaders at the national and state levels to follow the electoral; process in an open and transparent manner.

He told his audience: “What I want is a transparent process so that the confidence of the people will be strengthened.”

But Dr Ardo in reaction to the statement credited to Buahri said: “ With PDP’s accusative criticism of President Buhari’s endorsement of APC’s governorship candidate in Edo, and the presidency’s response to the accusation, it is clear now that the position of the law that ‘a person remains innocent till proven guilty’ is certainly not enough to entrust public office into the hands of people facing criminal charges.

Surely, there are also moral and ethical aspects attached to holding offices of public trust that are no less important in the eyes of society which need to be taken into account.”
