The wait for the new Chief of Army Staff ended Thursday afternoon with the appointment of Major General Farouk Yahaya.

A press statement from the Defence Headquarters, signed by Acting Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu announced that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment.

He said that prior to his appointment, Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East code named  Operation HADIN KAI.

Major General Faruk Yahaya of Regular Course 37 is from Zamfara State.

The appointment ends all speculations that followed who will get the coveted position after the death of the former COAS, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru in a plane crash in Kaduna last Friday.
