NCC partners Nigerian Universities to facilitate ICT growth

The Executive Vice-Chairman of Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Dambatta, has disclosed that as part of the NCC commitment to promote indigenous content development and sustained innovation in the ICT sector, the Commission is working with Universities across the country in updating  their curriculum to global standards.

Dambatta spoke at  a forum for  South East Stakeholders in the telecom industry  Emerging Technologies Research and ICT  Innovation Forum  with  theme” Leveraging ICTs to build information and knowledge societies for achieving the National Digital Economy’.

He said the telecommunications sector has emerged as a key driver of socio economic activities, social advancements and Innovation globally,stating the growth
 in the ICT sector is further enhanced by the Federal Government’s introduction of the National Digital Economy Policy Strategy (NDEPS),  to leverage more Nigerians especially the Youths across the country to participate actively in emerging trends in the ICT sector.

The NCC boss, who was represented by the commission’s Head of Research and Development communication, Kelechi Nwankwo, said that the forum was geared towards having Nigerians in the Innovative space across the regions to understand where ICT is going. 

He stated that “the forum affords us the opportunity to engage with the nation’s digitally savvy youths and other stakeholders in the Tech ecosystem to explore effective ways of promoting indigenous content development and digital adoption as well as Innovative services that will foster industry and national growth”.

He maintained that finding innovative ways of unlocking the next frontiers of growth in the sector is a key regulatory focus of the commission which is why the annual ICT Innovative forum is strategically important to the commission.

He noted that the forum supports pillars 5 and 7 of the NDEPS which are focused on digital service development and promotion as well as digital society and emerging technologies.

“The current momentum being witnessed in the Nigerian technology space is attributable to the regulatory approach of the commission which is focused on effective regulation of the telecommunications sector in ways that does not inhibit competition but foster innovation and industry growth” he said.

Earlier in his address, Executive Commissioner, Technical Services of  NCC, Ubale Ahmed,stated that there was the need for active participation of Nigerian SMEs in the communications ecosystem, by leveraging on the Innovation friendly policies of the commission, aimed at stimulating indegenous content development in the telecommunications and other vertical sectors for accelerated economic growth and development.
