Kano state Commissioner for information, Malam Muhammad Garba has been appointed spokesman for Gawauna/Garo Campaign Council, a platform designed to ensure the victory of the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Kano state, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawauna and his running mate, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo.
Garba who was also Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives 1993 and to the Deputy Governor of Kano state from 1999-2003, is a season journalist of international repute.
He was appointed Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture in 2015 during the first tenure of Ganduje administration and reappointed Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs in 2019.
The appointment is in consideration of Garba’s decades of experience as professional journalist, an image maker and track record as Spokesperson for the government of Kano state since 2015.
He is a responsible and reliable public servant and a leading figure of international professional media bodies that included member, Steering Committee, International Federation of Journalists (IFJ): elected President of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) in Casablanca, Morocco, the first to be held by candidate from West African sub-continent; elected two-term President of West African Association of Journalists (WAJA) in Bamako, Mali and two-term President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The journalist-cum image maker also held various media related and adhoc responsibilities in the country which include Convener, Media and Publicity (Chairman), Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), Federal Commissioner representing Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) at the Fiscal Responsibility Commission; and member Board of Directors of various federal and state establishments.
Since his appointment as Commissioner for Information in 2015, he has been managing the information flow as well as government media relations which has not only ensured industrial harmony but also excellent working relationship.
The appointment is immediate effec And would coordinate among other things, media and publicity activities of the Campaign Council for the 2023 governorship election in the state.
He is to be deputized in the Campaign Directorate by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Malam Garba Yusuf Abubakar, who has variously served as Commissioner in the ministries of Information 2003-2005, Land and Physical Planning 2005-2006, Environment, 2006-2010 and Finance 2010-2011, had also served as Director Publicity, Shekarau 2003/2007.
The appointment is with immediate effect. It was based on the recommendation of the candidate and the Campaign Council, and was endorsed by the leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state and the governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The Office of the Spokesperson will coordinate the media and publicity activities of the Campaign Council for the 2023 governorship election in the state.
