The Management of Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu, has commended the federal government for the various efforts it has put on ground towards revitalisation and upgrading of Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital Enugu(FNHE),But pleaded with South East governors to complemend the efforts of the federal government government,since it is the only such of it,s kind in the entire South East zone.
The Chairman,Board of Management, FNHE, Hon. Shaban Ohinoyi Shuaibu, made the passionate appeal while speaking to news men,at the occasion of the 53rd Annual General and Scientific Meeting(AGSM) of Association of Psychiatrics in Nigeria(APN),held in Enugu.
Hon Shuaibu disclosed that the federal government has committed much resources and through prudent management anchored by the current Chief Medical Director, Professor Monday Igwe, the hospital is turning a new leaf from it,s ugly past.
Hon Shuaibu stressed that even as tremendous progress has been made in upgrading FNHE by the federal government, the enormous challenge of serving the whole of South East zone and parts of North Central zone,demands that FNHE should be adequately equipped and funded. He pleaded with the various state governors which FNHE falls within their catchment a rea, to support FNHE management in achiving more.
His words,’It is good a thing that the 53rd Annual General and Scientific Meeting(AGSM) is holding at the hospital in Enugu. Though the meeting is generally rotationak, but the choice of Enugu to host this year,s meeting stems on the fact that FNHE is presently taking a new form.the federal government has done marvellously, through good mamagement under Prof. Igwe. It is not yet all. We still have some abandoned project. We still need to add more equipments so as to satisfy our scope of service delivery’.
‘The Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital Enugu is the only one serving the South East zone and some states in the North Central zone. I want to use to plead with the governors of the South East zone and those other states to support our efforts’.
The 53rd Annual General and Scientific Meeting of Association of Psychiatrics in Nigeria(APN), holding in Enugu from November 23rd to 26 is themed,’ INSECURITY AND FORCED DISPLACEMENT;…Mental Health and Psychological Implication,With Sub themes-Child and Maternal Mental Health in a Conflict Situation,Emerging Trends in Substance we use in Nigeria and Leadership Succession in Nigeria: Mental Health Implication. It was declared open by the Enugu state governor, Dr Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, ably represented by the state commissioner for health.Profesror Ikechukwu Obi.
Prof. Obi while commending the theme of the meeting asserted that it is a very big task to find an individual who is in complete state of health.He explained that somebody can look physically healthy whereas he might be in poor state of health either economically or socially.
His words,’Nobody is in a complete state of health.Health is a complete state of adjustment to physical,social and economic well being of man”.
He commended the Association of Psychiatrics in Nigeria(APN) for holdinp their 53rd Annual General and Scientific Meeting Enugu, stating that the continued peace and security enthroned in the state by Governor Ugwuanyi might have informed their decision.
In his key note address, Dr Bachir Yakasai expressed optimism that various research findings will shield more light on the causes of mental health and how to curb it, so as to enhance our national growth.
Several lecture series and symposiums on varying topics on mental health implications were rendered by Professor Uwakwe,Dr Oyedeji Ayorinde.Prof. Gureje among others.

Prof. Igwe expressed optimism that the lectures and contributions made at the meeting will guide in proferring solutions to the problem of insecurity in Nigeria.
