A 29-year-old businessman, John Jang, was on Tuesday docked in a Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja for allegedly stealing his employer, N3.8million
The police charged, Jang of Augwan Cement, Federal Capital Territory, with criminal breach of trust by servant, theft by servant and false information with intent to mislead public servant.
The prosecution counsel, Stanley Nwafoaku, said that on Dec.22, 2022, at about 8:48 pm, the complainant, Mr Emmanuel Olusesi of Decent Shelter Plaza, Life Camp Abuja, reported the matter at Life camp Police Station.
Nwafoaku alleged that in 2021 and 2022, the complainant entrusted his business to the defendant to manage and in December 2022, he carried out an internal audit on the accounts.
He alleged that during the account audit, it was discovered that the defendant stole N3, 823,000 million from the business money.
Nwafoaku alleged that during police investigation, the defendant claimed that he was abducted; however, the sum of N750, 000 was recovered from him.
He told the court that all effort to recover the remaining N3, 073, 000 from Jang proved abortive.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened sections 314, 289 and 140 of the penal code law.
The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The defence counsel, Charity Nwosu made a bail application for the defendant in the most liberal terms.
Nwosu made the application citing sections 36 of the 1999 constitution and sections 158 of the Administration of the Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, promised that the defendant will not jump bail if granted.
The prosecution counsel, however, did not object to the bail application made by the defense counsel.
The Judge, Muhammed Wakili admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1.5 million and one surety in like sum.
Wakili ordered that the surety must provide a BVN print out, recent passport photograph and a valid identification card, which must be verified by the court registrar.
The Judge adjourned the matter until Feb.22, for hearing.
