Activities resume in AMAC as NULGE suspends strike

By Daniel Tyokua

Office activities have resumed in Abuja Municipal Area council (AMAC) after the suspension of two weeks strike embarked upon by Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).

Speaking on the resumption in his office on Tuesday, the chairman Abuja Municipal Area council, Christopher Maikalangu commended the minister of FCT Nyesom Wike for resolving the issue.

Maikalangu who spoke through the supervisory councillor on special duties Hon. Emmanuel Inyang, said the council had already paid its staff two months of the arrears before the strike was suspended.

Two weeks ago, NULGE embarked on strike over 25 months arrears but the minister of FCT waded into the matter, which resulted to suspension of the strike.

Maikalangu said, “we have resume fully, all the offices are occupied by those that suppose to occupy them.

“We have done just to the NULGE officials and the staff, they went on strike for specific reasons which they made some demands clearly known, but we have already paid them two months, even before the strike was suspended, the two months N35,000 bonus to federal civil servants in Nigeria, courtesy of the president.

“We appeal to the federal government to consider Area Councils too in the bonus like Federal agencies because the Councils are in the Federal Capital Territory. The 40% to be paid by the administration is increasing burden on the administration, so we appeal for more allocation”

On his part, the NULGE chairman in AMAC, Hassan Haruna said the issues were not resolved but put on hold following the minister of FCT’s intervention.
