Empowering Hygiene Heroes: Abuja Rotary Club holds WASH Initiative, trains participants

In a bid to empower the cause of sustainable hygiene culture, the Rotary Club of Abuja, Ministers Hill recently held its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) project in Jahi 2 community of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

In a statement, the Project Chairman, Stanley Oranika said the project originated from critical insights gathered through extensive community feedback which highlighted substantial gaps in local hygiene and sanitation practices.

“Motivated by Rotary International’s focus on improving health, the club launched this initiative to empower residents, particularly women, children, and youth, by educating them on the importance of clean water and sanitation,” he said.

According to Oranika, the innovative initiative trained hygiene champions, tasked with proliferating essential WASH knowledge across the community to set the stage for a sustainable hygiene culture.

At its core, the project’s impact involved practical hands-on training sessions where community members learned correct handwashing techniques and the importance of regular hygiene. These sessions were complemented by the distribution of soaps and detergents, ensuring that beyond learning, participants also had the resources to implement the practices.

Noteworthy activities included interactive demonstrations led by project leaders, club members and friends who engaged participants in direct demonstrations to reinforce the learning process. “We saw an enthusiastic turnout, with community members eager to learn and pass on their knowledge,” said Project Chair, Stanley Oranika, reflecting on the initiative’s reach.

Mr Oranike assured that the project would continue for sustainable impact. “Each month, we’ll revisit Jahi 2, to assess progress and provide further training. This ongoing engagement aims to nurture the seeds of hygiene education sown during the initial project phase,” he further explained.

He therefore charged participants to look at the broader implications of maintaining proper hygiene as that would play a huge role in the organisation’s efforts to achieve a global improvement in health and hygiene. “My little and your little put together will amount to a lot.”
