Former Cross River Speaker quits PDP

By Myke Uzendu, Abuja

Former Speaker, Cross River House of Assembly, Mr John Lebo, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Lebo, who was the Speaker of the 8th assembly, disclosed his resignation in a statement signed by him and made available to newsmen in Calabar on Sunday.

In the statement dated May 10, and addressed to the PDP Chairman,  Adadama Ward, Abi Local Government Area, Lebo did not offer any explanation for his resignation just as he did not mention his next political moves.

The resignation letter read in part, “I wish to communicate my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels.

“I appreciate the opportunity and platform offered to me by the party in the last few years. I wish you the best.”

These are not the best of times for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, which has described itself as the largest political party in Africa following a defection tsunami that has been causing countless damages to the party.

The flood gate of defection was opened in its strongholds, the South-East geo-political zone with the resignation of a former governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha.

The resignation of the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives triggered the highest massive departure of PDP stalwarts ever recorded since its inception in 1998. As of the last count, over 7,000 stalwarts of the party resigned their membership of the party in Imo State.

Also caught in the defection fever were prominent businessman and PDP chieftain in Abia, Chief Chris Odinaka Igwe, and the former National President of Ibeku Youth Association, Uzodinma Ugele. Igwe dumped the PDP with over 5,000 PDP faithful to the APC, after a several meeting with the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.
