From Maurice Okafor, Enugu
Some Igbo youths across Civil Society Groups, religeous organisations, student unions and other stakeholders have described ranching as a panacea to curtailing farmers-herdsmen crises prevalent in Igbo land.
They urged the governors in the South-East zone to embrace the system, just as Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu state has blazed the trail.
Among other issues, they gave the advice during their National Convention held at Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu over the weekend.
Briefing newsmen in at the Ohanaeze National Secretariat,GRA, Enugu, the acting National Youth Leader, Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu, said they were advocating for ranching as a strategy to curtail the rate of incessant destruction of farmlands owned by peasant farmers by wandering Fulani hersdsmen and their cattle.
Part of the Communique reads: “The continued menace of the atrocities of the Fulani terrorist herdsmen in Igbo land should be collectively curbed by the Igbo governors and other political office holders with a simultaneous aggressive approach to ranching across the region.
“These ranching project should be done with full engagement and participation of stakeholders from the Igbo communities in working out the legislative frame work to ensure a generally acceptable master plan”.
They also called on the South-East governors to involve the youths in securing the zone, as well to imbibe training Igbo youths in skills acquisition.
They also appealed to President Tinubu for unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader from incarceration, asding that his release will end the Monday sit-at-home in the zone and reduce the level of insecurity in the zone.
