Judiciary needs to perform its role unhindered – CJN

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola has said the judiciary needs to perform its role unhindered in the country.

He stated this during the flag -off and ground breaking ceremony of the N37 billion Abuja division of Appeal Court building at Dakibiyu District on Wednesday.

Ariwoola said the judiciary deserves an environment that would make it perform the functions.

CJN explained that taking good care of the judiciary would help in promoting of peace and justice in the country.

He said, “All the judiciary needs is to be left to perform its role unhindered, as much as possible, once you take care of the judiciary, you’ve taken care of justice. If you cry for peace anywhere in the world without justice, that can be no peace.

“We guarantee peace, we promise to ensure that peace is given to whoever is due, so that we can all enjoy peace. Justice is important and imperative. We promise we will always give justice”

In his remarks, the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike said the construction of Abuja division of the Appeal Court will cost the government thirty seven billion naira.

He said N37 billion had been captured in the 2024 budget for the project, while N30 billion had so far been released for the work.

Wike said the five storey building which is expected to be ready in September, 2025 would have ten court rooms with offices.

He added that President Tinubu had also approved the construction of 40 housing units for the accommodation of judges and justices.

According to him, out of the 40 houses,10 would be allocated to the Court of Appeal, 10 to the Federal High Court and 20 to the FCT Courts.

He further said that Tinubu had equally approved the construction of retirement homes for judges and justices, beginning with the heads of courts.

“Mr President has approved the construction of retirement homes for the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, the Chief Judge of the FCT, President of the Industrial Courts and the President of the Court of Appeal.

“The Chief Judge of FCT also requested for more court rooms for the Magistrates in Maitama, Asokoro and Garki Districts.

“I want to assure that the foundation of the accommodation and retirement homes will be laid in August and completed before September 2024,” Wike said.
