NSDC boss takes leadership role at global sugar organisation

By Felix Khanoba

Kamar Bakrin, the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), has been elected as the Chairman of the Administrative Committee for the International Sugar Organisation (ISO).

This development was announced following the 64th Council Meeting of the ISO, held in New Delhi, India.

The Administrative Committee is tasked with supervising and providing recommendations on ISO’s operations, ensuring that policies and procedures remain current.

During his recent trip to India, Bakrin chaired several important meetings that laid the groundwork for the 64th ISO Council session.

In a statement, Bakrin expressed, “This appointment is a significant acknowledgment for Nigeria. It offers a platform to influence ISO’s policies, decisions, and initiatives, enhance our collaboration with leading sugar producers globally, and advocate for Nigeria’s interests.”

This marks the second year in a row that Bakrin has been appointed to a key leadership position within the ISO.

Last year, he served as the Vice Chairman of the Administrative Committee during the meeting in London.

At the recent meeting in India, Bakrin, leading the Nigerian delegation, was instrumental in the discussions and decision-making processes over the three-day event.

The ISO is an intergovernmental organization committed to improving the global sugar market by tackling industry challenges and fostering cooperation to ensure market stability and sustainability.

Representing 87 member states, the ISO covers 92% of global sugar exports, 87% of production, 64% of consumption, and 34% of imports.

The 64th ISO Council meeting, held at the Bharat Mandapam Conference Centre in New Delhi, saw participation from delegates of over 30 countries, along with representatives from international organizations, diplomats, and Indian government officials.

The meeting focused on advancing the use of sugar as a sustainable biofuel to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
