..Vows to hold Chairman accountable
Following the recent judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria affirming financial autonomy of Nigerias 774 local governments, The Ezeagu Sons and Daughters Forum International (ESDFI) comprising of all the communities in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, have expressed their commitment to holding their local government chairman accountable.
The group in a statement co-signed by its President General, Maurice Anijiofor (Omeile) and Linus Obiora Madukaife National Director of Welfare, pointed out that a local government is the government of the grassroots, designed as an instrument or administrative mechanism for rural governance and development.
The group comprising of 141,000 members said,
“Our local government has experienced a significant level of irregularities and backwardness compared to other local governments in Enugu, ranging from abandoned projects, dilapidated roads and school buildings, insecurities, nonchalant attitudes of local government workers, among others.
“Hence, we affirm that the forthcoming LGA election will be different. We will ensure fairness and equity, making certain that the next chairman of Ezeagu comes from the appropriate zone, using the existing zoning formula. Any attempt by saboteurs to thwart this zoning formula using thugs and law enforcement agencies will be countered by our members spread across all clans and reporting to the highest authority.
“We call on all community members to actively participate in the election process and oversight, ensuring their voices are heard and interests represented. Additionally, we advocate for the implementation of transparent mechanisms to track local government projects and funds, promoting accountability and efficiency”.
He said that the forum plans to collaborate with Non-governmental organizations and the media for effective monitoring and reporting of local government activities. It stated that the situation will enhance transparency and encourage responsible governance.
Speaking on the forth coming local government election, the group said that nominated candidates should be prepared to undergo political debates before elections, allowing the community to evaluate their capabilities and plans.
They further warned incoming local government chairman that that residents will not condone any lapses.
“Specific measures will be taken if the chairman fails to meet the community’s expectations, ensuring that the needs and development of Ezeagu are prioritized.
“We are determined to ensure that our local government thrives under competent and accountable leadership” the group stressed.
