Zamfara group warns of alleged government-bandit ties

The Zamfara Conscience Movement (ZCM), a non-governmental organization, has raised serious concerns about an alleged growing connection between the Zamfara State government, headed by Governor Dauda Lawal, and criminal gangs responsible for widespread violence in the region.

The group’s alarm was triggered by a recent video featuring Bello Turji, a well-known bandit leader, in which he openly criticizes key political figures, including the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.

The ZCM argues that Turji’s bold statements are unlikely to have been made without some level of government backing, suggesting a troubling alliance.

ZCM Chairman Sahabi Lawali, in a statement, referred to an earlier video showing masked armed bandits reportedly admitting to links with the government.

Lawali suggested that these developments might be a strategy by Governor Lawal to use bandits to undermine his predecessor, thereby compromising the rule of law and public safety.

Lawali highlighted the worsening security situation under the current administration, contrasting it with the relative stability during Matawalle’s tenure.

He criticized Governor Lawal for focusing on political disputes rather than addressing the security crises affecting the state.

The ZCM called for a shift in the governor’s priorities, urging him to support federal efforts to tackle the root causes of banditry and to take decisive action to prevent further attacks. The group noted the involvement of former IGP MD Abubakar, who had previously led reconciliation efforts under Matawalle, as a positive step that should be built upon.

The ZCM demands a thorough investigation into these allegations to restore public trust and ensure justice.

Lawali emphasized the need for immediate action to dismantle any alliances between the government and criminal elements, stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of Zamfara’s political system and safeguarding public safety.
