Nigeria, Denmark discuss monitoring framework, financing for climate change programmes

By Chesa Chesa

Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, has engaged with his Danish counterpart, Tomas Anker Christensen on ways Nigeria’s climate change agenda can be supported by Denmark in terms of real-time monitoring framework and financing options.

The engagement with Denmark held on Friday, same day Ngelale was briefed on progress being recorded in Nigeria’s push to decarbonize its robust network of telecoms infrastructure facilities by Green ICT Champion, Mr. Diseye Isoun, who flew into Switzerland for the meeting.

The special envoy summed up the day thus: “The week ended with a very important virtual engagement with my counterpart, Denmark’s Special Climate Envoy, Mr. Tomas Anker Christensen on Friday, in Geneva, Switzerland, as we laid out President Bola Tinubu’s green industrial vision and other critical climate action initiatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The conversation led to an agreed set of next steps which will play a crucial role in providing a framework for monitoring climate action programmes in real-time while also placing de-risking capital formation at the forefront of global climate finance discussions as Nigeria leads the campaign for value chain localization in the global south.

“Earlier, I was briefed on progress being recorded in Nigeria’s push to decarbonize its robust network of telecoms infrastructure facilities by Green ICT Champion, Mr. Diseye Isoun, who flew into Switzerland for the meeting.

“There are tremendously exciting emissions displacement opportunities in the sector that will create job opportunities in the months ahead. Mr. Isoun is working hard to ensure that our frameworks are integrous and that our benchmarks are achievable.”
