Edo guber: Fate of Ighodalo, Okpebholo, Olumide others hang on 2.6m voters – INEC

As Edo state governorship election inches closer, The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that 2,629,025 voters are eligible to vote in the September 21 governorship election.

The Commission also disclosed that 2,053,061 registered voters will also decide the next governor of Ondo state on the 16th of November.

The electoral empire gave demography of voters in Edo which shows that males were leading with 52.11%, female 47.89%, youths (18 – 35 years) 37.4%.

The Commission gave the final figures after its meeting at the INEC headquarters on Tuesday during which it approved the final register of voters for the Edo and Ondo Governorship elections.

A statement signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner & Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee noted that the register integrated new voters from the recent Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) as well as the figures of successful applicants for transfer from other States of the Federation to the two States.

Highlighting the demography of voters, the commission said that Edo State “now has 2,629,025 registered voters. Of this figure, 1,370,061 (52.11%) are male while 1,258,964 (47.89%) are female. Youths (18 – 35 years) account for 983,133 (37.4%), followed by 914,806 middle aged (36 – 49) persons. Together, they constitute 1,897,939 (72.2%) of registered voters in the State.

“In terms of occupation, 868,764 students constitute the majority of voters (33.05%). There are 4,199 (0.16%) Persons with Disability (PWDs).

“The new register represents 4.9% increase over the 2023 General Election figure of 2,501,081”.

Also in Ondo State the Commission reported the figures as follows:

“The State now has 2,053,061 registered voters. Of this figure, 1,034,006 (50.36%) are male while 1,034,964 (47.89%) are female. Youths (18 – 35 years) account for 726,944 (35.41%), followed by 721,982 (35.17%) middle aged (36 – 49) persons. Together, they constitute 1,448,926 (70.57%) of registered voters in the State.

“In terms of occupation, 694,938 students constitute the majority of voters (33.85%).  There are 1,782 (0.09%) Persons with Disability (PWDs).

“The new register represents a 3.0% increase over the 2023 General Election figure of 1,191,344”.

INEC further stated that the detailed breakdown of the register for each State by Local Government Areas, gender, age, occupation and disability has been uploaded to our website and social media platforms for public information.

It added that in the next few days, the Commission will release the timetable for the collection of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) for the two States for all categories of voters including new registrants from the last CVR, voters that applied for transfers, replacements and uncollected cards from previous registrations.

Note that 17 political parties will take part in the election. They include: Uwaifo Osaro  — Action Alliance (AA), Aner Aliu — Social Democratic Party (SDP), Azena Azemhe Friday — New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Osifo Isiah — All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Ugiagbe Sylvester — All People Movement (APM), Areleogbe Osalumese — All Peoples Party (APP), Akhime Afere — Action Democratic Party (ADP) and Udoh David — African Action Congress (AAC).

Other candidates are Akhalamhe Amiemenoghena — Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Ighodalo Asuerinme — Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osirame Edeipo — Boot Party (BP), Iyere Kennedy — Accord Party (AP) and Obazele Agbone — African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Also in the race are Olumide Akpata — Labour Party (LP), Okpebholo Monday — All Progressives Congress (APC), Key Ndidi — Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Okungbowa Ovbokhan — Young Progressive Party (YPP).
