Northern group rubbishes Wike over alleged ‘political banditry’, calls for his sack

The Northeast Unity Forum (NUF), a non-governmental organisation, has issued a stern condemnation of what it describes as the “brazen political banditry” reportedly exhibited by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The NUF’s criticism comes in response to recent statements by Wike, where he allegedly threatened to instigate crises in states governed by People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governors who are in support of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

The forum, through its convener Abubakar Kabir, argued that Wike’s comments are indicative of a “bandit-inclined disposition” and “thuggish orientation,” which they assert have no place in a democratic society.

Kabir’s statement further accused Wike of losing touch with political realities, particularly after being sidelined in Rivers State politics by Governor Fubara, who reportedly denied him access to state resources.

The NUF believes Wike has become a political outcast in his home state and a liability on the national stage.

The statement did not shy away from highlighting Wike’s political history, labeling him as a figure marked by “betrayal and disloyalty.”

It criticized his past actions, including his perceived ingratitude toward political mentors such as Rotimi Amaechi, Goodluck Jonathan, and Patience Jonathan, who were instrumental in his rise to prominence.

The forum also took aim at Wike’s alleged anti-party activities, citing his support for candidates outside the PDP as evidence of his indiscipline and self-serving nature.

The NUF warned that Wike’s threats to “put fire in the states” of governors supporting Fubara represent a serious threat to national peace and stability, even as it argued that such inflammatory rhetoric is unbecoming of a public official and must not be tolerated.

The forum therefore demanded Wike’s immediate removal as FCT Minister, arguing that his continued presence in the office undermines the rule of law and national stability.

The group also urged President Bola Tinubu to choose between upholding democratic values or aligning with a “compromised politician” like Wike.

Furthermore, the NUF called on the PDP leadership to take decisive action against Wike, emphasizing the need to restore discipline and order within the party.

The forum also argued that Wike’s actions are not just a threat to his party but to Nigeria’s democracy as a whole, and stressed the importance of rejecting individuals who prioritize personal ambition over the nation’s interests.
