Mohammed Dan Abba Shehu recently moved a motion on the floor of the House, emphasizing the urgent need to dredge major dams and rivers to prevent floods. This call to action is motivated by the government’s neglect of farmers’ efforts to combat flooding, which has hindered the implementation of effective drainage systems.
The statistics are alarming: 80% of Nigerian farmers have suffered substantial crop losses, leading to debt in the farming business. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, floods destroyed crops worth 756 billion Naira in 2018, 890 billion Naira in 2019, and over 1.2 trillion Naira in 2020. These numbers underscore the severity of the issue and the need for prompt action.
The House of Representatives has resolved to urge the Federal Ministries of Water Resources and Environment to direct the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency to evaluate the framework drainage control system. This evaluation is crucial to actualizing the desired result of preventing floods and protecting farmers’ livelihoods.
The motion highlights the importance of supporting farmers, who are the backbone of Nigeria’s economy. By addressing the root causes of flooding, the government can help mitigate the economic and social impacts on farming communities.
