The House Committee on Environment has initiated an investigation into oil spillage in the Niger Delta region, focusing on Aiteo E&P and Nigerian Agip Oil Company (now Oando Oil Ltd).
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon.Tajudeen Abbas, warned oil companies that refuse to appear before the committee will face consequences. Committee Chairman, Hon. Pondi Gbabojor, emphasized the need for sustainable oil industry practices.
The House resolved to compel Aiteo E&P to conduct an environmental impact assessment, including host communities and stakeholders. This assessment aligns with international best practices.
Key objectives include assessing environmental impact, ensuring compliance with regulations, and urging relief materials for impacted communities. Compensation for damaged economic trees and aquatic life is also sought.
Hon. Rufikat Ayetoro, Director in the Ministry of Environment, attributed oil spillage to pipeline leakage and vandalization. Illegal refining of oil for the black market is another significant cause.
The committee aims to find solutions, hold accountable parties responsible, and recommend remedial actions. This investigation’s outcome will set a precedent for addressing environmental issues.
Stakeholder cooperation is crucial for the investigation’s success. By working together, Nigeria can mitigate environmental damage and ensure sustainable oil industry practices.
The committee’s findings and recommendations will be closely watched by environmental advocates and communities affected by oil spillage. The investigation’s outcome will shape Nigeria’s approach to environmental protection.
