Hardship: Police set to discipline officers caught on viral video extorting motorists

Ebonyi State Police Command has commenced investigation in the alleged professional misconduct against some of its personnel indulge in extorting money from motorists.

This is as a recent viral video trending online which displayed some personnels on duty at a checkpoint alleged to be extorting motorcycle operators and other road users.
In two separate video clips shown online when uniformed persons suspected to be personnel of the Nigeria Police Force were indulging in the act, collecting what appeared to be Naira notes from commercial motorcycle riders, motorists, and depositing same in their vaults.

The videos posted by armature cameras, closely got the corrupt activities of the officers which happened over the weekend at the Ishike and Hilltop checkpoints in Abakaliki metropolis.

In statement issued on Tuesday by the State Police Command Spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu noted that the Police authorities have strongly condemned the actions of the identified officers involved, stating that disciplinary actions have been intiated against them to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The Command unequivocally condemns their actions and has identified the officers involved, while disciplinary actions have already been initiated against them.

“The Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Police Command, CP Anthonia Adaku Uche-Anya, is using this medium to reiterate the Command’s zero tolerance for extortion or any form of misconduct while noting that any officer found wanting would face disciplinary actions”, the statement concluded.
