The House of Representatives has urged security agency heads to tackle the growing “one chance” robbery issue by taxi operators in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and address escalating insecurity.
Hon. Dabo Ismail Haruna, representing Toro Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, moved the motion during a plenary session. He cited unregistered and unpainted taxis worsening the security situation.
The Lawmaker expressed concern that FCT residents live in fear due to deteriorating security, allowing ruthless criminals to operate with impunity. The motion highlighted broad-daylight robberies, kidnappings, and armed robbery incidents.
Haruna noted instances of people being kidnapped from suburbs, Airport Road, and city center estates. The tragic kidnapping and murder of Miss Nimah Sulaiman, a Legislative Aide to Hon. Dabo, was also recalled.
Miss Sulaiman was taken at gunpoint by “one-chance” operators on October 17, 2024. Despite paying the ransom, her body was found later that evening.
The House emphasized the need for collective responsibility to ensure citizens’ safety and security. This includes collaboration with security agencies such as the State Security Service (SSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).
The House’s resolution aims to prompt swift action from these agencies to address growing insecurity. By working together, the government and security agencies can restore peace and security to the FCT.
Ultimately, the goal is to protect FCT citizens from harm and ensure a safe and secure environment for all residents and visitors.
