The Labour Party Caucus in the House of Representatives has expressed deep concerns over the growing trend of anti-democratic activities and developments that undermine Nigeria’s civil governance.
This concern was sparked by the recent controversial arrest and imprisonment of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, who is facing allegations of defamation initiated by Chief Afe Babalola, SAN.
According to the leader of the LP Caucus, Hon. Afam Ogene, the manner in which Barrister Farotimi was arrested in a gestapo style from his office in Lagos state, and the harassment of members of staff of his law office, has raised worries about the erosion of democratic principles and the silencing of dissenting voices in Nigeria.
The Caucus has called for judicial neutrality, impartiality, and fair hearing in the defamation case against Barrister Farotimi. Hon. Ogene emphasized that the judiciary remains the last bastion of hope for all citizens in a democratic society, and it is imperative that the judiciary upholds the principles of impartiality and neutrality at all times.
The Labour Party Caucus has committed to upholding the values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. In this regard, they call on the authorities involved in this controversial case to ensure that Barrister Farotimi’s rights and privileges are not denied.
Barrister Farotimi had previously alleged that a court process was initiated against him without his knowledge, and that a bench warrant was issued for his arrest, ostensibly for failing to appear in court. He maintained that these actions were part of a deliberate and fraudulent scheme to manipulate the judicial process, ultimately leading to his arrest and imprisonment.
The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the development, stating that “These actions constitute a troubling breach of the rule of law and the sanctity of the legal profession.”
The Labour Party Caucus has demanded that the embattled lawyer be given fair hearing, and not made to suffer from any manipulated processes. They emphasize that democracy is under threat when democratic institutions are manipulated against the people by highly placed individuals.
The call for judicial neutrality and fair hearing in this case is a crucial step in upholding the principles of democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria. It is essential that the judiciary remains impartial and independent in its decision-making processes to ensure that justice is served.
