The Nigerian political landscape is mourning the loss of a distinguished leader, Lt. General Jeremiah Useni, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 82. Former Senate President, David Mark, has described General Useni as a “hero” and a “distinguished officer and gentleman of all seasons.”
Senator Mark expressed his deep sadness over the loss, extending his heartfelt condolences to General Useni’s family, colleagues, the government and people of Plateau State, and the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He praised General Useni’s selfless services, bravery, and leadership, which he said will forever be remembered and honoured ¹.
General Useni had a illustrious career in the military and politics. He served as the Military Governor of old Bendel State in 1984 and later became the Minister of Transport and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under General Sani Abacha’s administration ². After retiring from the military, General Useni transitioned into politics, serving as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later as Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District from 2015 to 2019 ³.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has also paid tribute to General Useni, describing his passing as a “tremendous loss” to the state and the nation. He praised General Useni’s exemplary leadership and commitment to public service, particularly in promoting peace and security in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State ⁴.
General Useni’s legacy extends beyond his military and political career. He was a champion of rural economic growth and infrastructure development, particularly in his home state of Plateau. His contributions to the development of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are also noteworthy, having served as Minister of the FCT under General Abacha’s administration ².
As Nigeria mourns the loss of this distinguished leader, his family, friends, and colleagues are taking comfort in the memories of his selfless service and leadership. General Useni’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Nigerians, and his contributions to the development of the country will never be forgotten.
