Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has revealed that his sponsorship of gender bills in parliament aims to promote political inclusivity and accelerate national development. Kalu believes that giving women a platform to contribute will bring significant growth.

Kalu made this disclosure in London while celebrating the 60th birthday of former Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Director General, Arunma Oteh. He praised Oteh as a role model worthy of emulation for her outstanding life of service.

The Deputy Speaker is sponsoring a bill seeking to alter the Constitution to provide for seat reservation for women in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly. The bill aims to remedy the low representation of women in legislative houses by providing for special constituencies to be contested and filled by women.

Kalu emphasized that the achievements of women like Oteh inspired him to contemplate bills supporting women and guaranteeing their greater representation in Nigerian politics. He described Oteh as a proof that with diligence, excellence, and application of God-given talents, the top is just a starting point.

During the celebration, Kalu also commended Oteh’s leadership and integrity, saying she has stamped her name indelibly in the annals of history. He expressed delight in being part of the celebration, representing Bende Federal Constituency where Oteh hails from.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, members of the House of Representatives, and captains of industry. Kalu’s remarks highlighted the importance of promoting women’s representation in politics and celebrating outstanding women like Arunma Oteh.

Kalu’s sponsorship of gender bills is a significant step towards promoting gender equality and political inclusivity in Nigeria. His efforts aim to create a more equitable society where women have equal opportunities to contribute and participate in politics.

The celebration of Arunma Oteh’s 60th birthday served as a testament to the impact of women in leadership positions. Kalu’s tribute to Oteh underscored the importance of recognizing and emulating outstanding women who have made significant contributions to society. ‎
