The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has commended the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his efforts in improving infrastructural development within the FCT.¹ This commendation was made known in a communiqué released following the Council’s historic first Congress, held on Saturday at the Council’s Secretariat in Utako, Abuja.
During the Congress, members discussed the state of the Union and Nation, urging relevant government authorities to improve economic and social development for citizens. The event was presided over by Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, and brought together over 400 members, including former Chairmen of Council and NAWOJ past leaders.
The NUJ FCT Council highlighted several critical issues, including the rising cost of living, poor power supply, and insecurity across the federation. The Council described the escalating cost of basic goods and services as a heavy burden on Nigerians, calling for immediate measures by the Federal Government to alleviate these hardships.
The Congress also expressed concern over the erratic power supply within the FCT, noting its impact on businesses and residents’ daily lives. The communiqué stated that frequent disruptions in electricity and water supply are pushing operational costs higher, reducing profit margins for businesses, and placing additional strain on Nigerians.
In addition to these concerns, the NUJ FCT Council voiced its grave concern over rising insecurity, including ritual killings and other heinous acts. The Council linked these incidents to economic downturn and emphasized the need for a collaborative effort to address economic and security challenges.
Comrade Grace Ike emphasized the commitment of the executive to the prosperity and unity of the Council. She stated that the Congress represents an opportunity to reaffirm the shared commitment to unity, progress, and the collective good of the profession.
The NUJ FCT Council urged the Federal Government to prioritize the restoration of basic amenities to improve the quality of life in the region. The Council also called for immediate measures to address the rising cost of living and insecurity.
The Congress concluded with a pledge to commit to unity and advancement of the union for the betterment of its members.
