A bombshell letter from Barrister Amobi Nzelu, Principal Partner of Amobi Nzelu & Co., has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action to address Nigeria’s worsening economic and social crises.
The strongly-worded letter, which has been making waves in political circles, pulls no punches in its assessment of the country’s woes.
Barrister Nzelu, a respected voice in the Nigerian legal community, began by quoting the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, who famously said that politicians’ statements are often “correct in the morning, doubtful in the afternoon, and false by evening.” Nzelu argued that this cynical view of politicians is justified, given the widespread distrust of the political class in Nigeria.
The lawyer then turned his attention to President Tinubu, praising his meteoric rise from Senator to Governor and now President. However, Nzelu emphasized that this rapid ascent comes with a corresponding responsibility to reposition Nigeria for greatness. He urged the President to harness the country’s vast mineral resources, which he estimated to be worth trillions, for the benefit of all Nigerians.
Nzelu also tackled the issue of electoral reform, arguing that the current system is heavily compromised and throws up leaders without conscience or character. He advocated for the unbundling of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) into three separate commissions, each with its own chairman and specific functions.
The letter further emphasized the need for strong institutions in Nigeria, rather than strong individuals. Nzelu cited the example of the United States, where institutions are robust enough to hold even the most powerful individuals accountable. He warned that the failure to build such institutions in Nigeria would only perpetuate corruption and injustice.
In a poignant conclusion, Nzelu described Nigeria as a country “hemorrhaging” from hunger, despair, and corruption. He urged the President to act quickly to address these pressing issues, citing biblical verses that emphasize the importance of divine timing.
The letter, signed in three colors – black, red, and green – to symbolize mourning, bleeding, and hope, respectively, has sparked intense debate and discussion among Nigerians. As the country continues to grapple with its many challenges, Barrister Nzelu’s letter serves as a clarion call for urgent reforms and decisive leadership.
